Cochlear Implants

A cochlear implant is an electronic device that acts as a solution to severe to profound hearing loss and congenital deafness. Named after Cochlea (snail-shaped part of the ear that helps in hearing), a cochlear implant is surgically placed inside the ear. And it transmits acoustic signals to the auditory nerve. This makes a cochlear implant different to a hearing aid.

Who can use a cochlear implant?

A cochlear implant can be used by children and adults who suffer from Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

How does a cochlear implant work?

A cochlear implant comprises two working parts:

Receiver-Stimulator : which is surgically placed under the skin;

Speech Processor : which is worn behind the ear just like a hearing aid.

These two parts of the cochlear implant act in tandem to stimulate the hearing (auditory) nerve and facilitate better understanding of speech.
